  • #9 Adobe is hurting designers 9 August 2023 | Issue #9 Adobe is hurting its customers Hi all! I’m on a city-sized ship floating around the North Pacific right now. So instead of new news, I’ll share a new article and some other recent articles you may have missed. NEW RESOURCES FOR YOU Adobe employees are worried that the software behemoth is introducing AI tools that will cost graphic designers their careers. I dig into why this might be happening in my latest blog post. Gartner recently released its Hype Cycle for...Read more
  • Who will be the first to create God? (yikes) Riding the Hype Cycle 2 August 2023 | Issue #8 Riding the AI hype cycle! Happy August (yeah, it's August already). As many of us wind down our summer and we start to get distracted by football – both kinds – there is still plenty going on in the world of AI and design. It sounds like MAICON was a huge success (more below), and it was well timed with the release of the Gartner AI Hype Cycle. Click to see larger version The Hype Cycle shows that generative AI is currently almost at the top of the Peak of Inflated...Read more
  • Gartner Predictions for AI and Jobs (it's a mixed bag) Gartner sees the potential, and the concerns, around generative AI. 26 July 2023 | Issue #7 Industry analyst Gartner released some recent recearch on how AI will impact jobs. The TLDR version is that Gartner expects AI's job impact to be net neutral by 2026. By 2036 Gartner expects there to be 500,000 new human jobs due to AI. While this sounds good, it may not apply to your job. Around 1900, 40% of the US worked on farms. Today that number is closer to 1.6%. Now this may sound really alarming, but these workers in 1900 didn't have career choices like SEO...Read more
  • The New Normal? Settling for AI's "Good Enough" in the Workplace 😒 The old way of doing things 19 July 2023 | Issue #6 Nobody wants to work for a guy like this. There is a popular meme making its way around the Internet where a designer dismisses the idea of losing their job to AI because it means clients would have to be able know what they want and then articulate it. I thought the same thing at first. I've spent decades doing revisions on projects because I gave the client exactly what they asked for. But then I built the After Design website and I paid attention to my thought...Read more
  • I've Seen This Movie Before – Why AI is Reminiscent of the Digital Design Revolution The old way of doing things 12 July 2023 | Issue #5 I had hair like this when I started studying design. But my goatee wasn't as glorious. This week saw the release of the "next big thing" with social networks. But there are people far more qualified than me (like Jay Clouse) to write about this, so check them out. This week I wanted to dig into why I'm actively talking about the impact AI will have on designers. It's because I've seen this movie before. When I first started studying design, it was just as desktop...Read more
  • Designing in the AI Era: Change is Coming Sooner than Expected Man preparing for AI bot army 5 July 2023 | Issue #4 People don't like change. And people really don't like hearing that change is coming for them against their will. This past weekend I posted on LinkedIn about how even Google results are torn on whether AI will replace graphic designers, and it led to a lot of conversation. Take a minute to read the post and let me know what you think. I'll probably expand on it in a future blog post. NEW RESOURCES FOR YOU This past week also saw a report by McKinsey that estimates that...Read more
